International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day on the 8th of March was celebrated by the Kisankala woman’s committee in style. A workshop was held to develop a mission and vision for the committee in collaboration with ARDERI NGO from Kolwezi. The ladies first celebrated the wonders of being born a woman and some powerful statements came out of that exercise. “I am proud of being a woman for I am the giver of life,” one of the participants said. There was an introductory discussion on violence in the home and ways to confront this negative behaviour. After much hard work a vision statement for the group was formulated:

To unite and work together in order to attain better lives

There were three core areas which will be amalgamated to come up with mission statements in due course. These areas will focus on formulation of groups to spearhead unity, capacity building and jobs. The ladies have pledged to form mini groups and act as mentors for the rest of the women in the village in order to convey the vision that came out of the workshop. Plenty of entertainment kept up the happy spirit and in the competitions the ladies won various prizes including wrappers, saucepans and cooking oil bowls. Everyone went home with a present in commemoration of this important day .
