OUR RESPONSIBILITY

Safety & Health

Safety

Africo Resources believes in its people as a resource for the sustainability of its operation.

Our safety vision underpins our targets of Zero Harm to our people Zero Damage to equipment and a Positive influence on all we come into contact with. The ultimate goal is to achieve an injury free operation by identifying and minimizing the potential risks and hazards in the work place and providing the required training and resources to achieve these goals.

Our Safety Performance in 2007 is a record of Zero Lost Time Injuries.

Through general safety inductions, on the job safety training and safety observations we aim to develop a safety culture amongst our personnel which they will adopt even in their homes.

Africo has selected the NOSA Health Safety and Environment management systems as our tool for developing working systems and auditing standards for our operations. Africo will work to international standards and best practices to achieve our safety targets and NOSA Five Star Certification.

Health

Medical surveillance

Africo Resources is developing a medical surveillance strategy to ensure that it promotes fitness for work and that the health impacts arising whilst working in its operation are mitigated and monitored. The program will entail three-phase medical assessments at pre-employment level, during the course pf employment and at the point of exit from Africo operations; to ensure that any occupational health impacts can be detected, managed and /or compensated as per existing company policies and statutory legislation.

Health promotion

Africo has focused on health awareness on ways of preventing disease which whilst may not be directly work related will have an impact on the work performance of the employees. These include creation of awareness on malaria prevention, STI and HIV prevention.

There is an ongoing campaign on promotion of access to free condoms as part of the three steps in personal protection against HIV and STIs. Further programs will be established to promote a non-discriminatory HIV/AIDS Policy and Voluntary Counseling Testing once resources become available for both personnel and the families.
