Once the potential environmental impacts of the operation are identified (See environmental impacts) it is essential to prioritise the management of these impacts based on the risk associated with each impact. This will ensure the potential impacts of a high risk nature are addressed first with the required amount of urgency.
Environmental management plans are designed to address the key identified impacts of the project to minimise the overall impact. The management plan was included as part of the Environmental Adjustment Plan (PDF - 10.2MB) presented to government, which can be downloaded.
Management plans for noise, atmospheric emissions, dust, erosion and water management have been prepared. Waste management will be carefully controlled with management plans for each waste type: tailings, waste rock, industrial waste, biodegradable waste, and recyclables. Where possible, recyclable material will be used to develop community business development projects.
Baseline and ongoing monitoring will be carried out on surface water, groundwater, soil, waste rock, air and noise to ensure the Environmental Management Plans are working effective to prevent pollution.
The Kalukundi Project will develop an Environmental Management System (as part of the Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management System) compliant with ISO 14001 standards to ensure effective management of environmental issues on site.
