Kalukundi flora and fauna

The Kalukundi Project is situated in Miombo woodlands which is a vegetation type which stretches from Tanzania in the east, across Malawi and Zambia, through the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo and into Angola. The vegetation at Kalukundi is described as tropical dry forest and is dominated by trees of Brachystegia species and Julbernardia paniculata. It is generally in good condition, although significant loss of trees is occurring due to charcoaling practices of the local population.

The majority of large fauna in the area has moved away due to predation by humans. Existing fauna on the concession area are small animals such as moles, squirrels and turtles. Avifauna are present in the area including owls, swifts and hawks.

It is envisaged that once mining commences and the concession is fenced off, the predation on fauna by humans will be reduced and local populations will be able to flourish.
