Africo Resources has once again made good on its word. After a challenging year, the company is now underway on its journey to building the Kalukundi mine project. For the mine project to begin, Kisankala village, located within the permit area, needs to be relocated. Africo entered into community consultation and stakeholder engagement with the village occupants and government officials in 2006 on the relocation process. This entailed doing surveys, selection of a new village site and signing of an agreement between the Chief, village representative and Africo to relocate the existing village.
Following this, a construction plan was made and a contractor, CCC, was signed on to start the brick making process. The CCC team set up station and the first brick was made in March 2008. The housing project will use economical solbricks, which require minimum cement consumption. Africo has purchased two brick making machines for this process and when the new village is complete, will train members of the community to operate the machines as an on-going SME project.
On Tuesday March 18th, as part of our community participatory approach, we called on the Kisankala village Development Committee (KVDC) to witness the first bricks being made. This was a memorable day for the team and comprised the president, the vice-president secretary and two area chiefs. CCC walked them through the brick making process and to them it was indeed a first step to the realisation of their dream of a long-awaited new village.
